Open The Book
[Matthew 19:14]
Bringing the Word of God
Open The Book is conducted in local schools where volunteers act out key parts of the Bible, using costumes and props.
The 10 minutes of scripted Bible story to a school assembly involve the children as much as possible in a fun and memorable fashion. After gaining the children’s interest with an introduction to the theme, we act out the story and finish with a quiet moment for reflection and an optional prayer. Each school is different in how they use us – St Swithun’s incorporate us into a full worship service; at Maple Tree we sing the Open the Book songs; and at Laburnum we have the joy of using the younger ages as our supporting actors where just being on stage helps boost their confidence. But whatever the setting, we are sharing the Gospel with the children of Sandy and Beeston (and those who supervise them.)
Preparation for and conducting each school assembly lasts for about an hour at 2.30pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. Volunteers need to sign up to the Open the Book Code of Practice, undertake training and organise DBS checks through your church. So if you feel the call to this amazing privilege of spreading God’s word to those who may otherwise never hear it, please get in touch.
There’s a role for you, whether you’re an adaptable Narrator who can time your delivery to the action on stage, or would rather throw on a tunic and ham up your miming with dramatic effect. We also need holiday cover and help with the props, co-ordinating meet ups and training, and feeding back to Open the Book. Please remember us in your prayers; your support is greatly appreciated. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms… With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:12–18
