All Souls Day
REMEMBERING LOVED ONES
– usually November on or close to All Souls DayÂ
Loss touches and affects all of us at some time in our lives. Every year the church holds a service of remembrance and thanksgiving for all who have been bereaved. It is a sensitive, quiet and reflective time for all who identify with loss. Â
Remembrance Day
– usually the 2nd Sunday in November
Remembering those who have sacrificed their lives in World Wars I & II and other conflicts in our past –Â and to give thanks and pray for all who serve in our armed forces today.
Beginning at the War Memorial in Bedford Road and continuing along the High Street to St. Swithun’s Church for a service at 11.30am.
St Swithun's Day
–Â usually the 15th July (or nearest Sunday)
St Swithin’s Day is celebrated on 15th July and is famously linked to the folklore that if it rains on this day, it will rain for the next 40 days, but if it’s fair, it will be 40 days of sunshine.
St Swithin was an Anglo-Saxon bishop of Winchester, and the legend is thought to have originated after his body was moved from an outdoor churchyard grave to an indoor shrine, which supposedly caused 40 days of rain. Â
Bedfordshire Day
–Â 28 November
To celebrate everything that’s good about the county and it’s also John Bunyan’s birthday, the area’s most famous son.
The first ever Bedfordshire Day was held in 2015 and was organised by the Friends of Bedfordshire Society who named the 28th as the day after a public vote found it was the most popular choice.
Baby Loss Awareness Week
Each year, we mark Baby Loss Awareness Week, joining in with the wave of light and offering space for families to have a moment of quiet to remember the little ones gone too soon.
