A Brief History of St. Swithun's Church & Sandy Charities

The earliest mention of a Church in Sandy is in the institution rolls of Bishop Hugh of Wells (c.1214), and the font bowl in the South aisle is thought to date from Saxon times. However, the earliest building work visible today dates from the fifteenth century, and extensive nineteenth century restoration means that apart from the West Tower very little earlier work can be seen.

Interesting features inside the Church include the statue of Captain Sir William Peel (1824-1858) in the South Transept, and the memorials in the North Transept to members of the Pym family of Hazells Hall, who have been patrons of the living since 1829.

Sandy Charities:

The Sandy Charities are an amalgamated collection of Charities established to help provide assistance to the poor of Sandy and for educational purposes.

Some of the Charities have their origins in the Parish of St Swithun, and consequently the Rector and a number of Church representatives sit on the board of Trustees.

Enquiries can be made, in absolute confidence, to the Rector, or to the Clerk of the Charities, Mr Peter Mount, at Woodfine Solicitors. Further information about Sandy Charities is found on the Town Councils website
